All in all acupuncture is a fantastic healing art which has been used
for hundreds of years.Acupuncture produces a more generalized or extra
segmental analgesia. These effects, combined with local needling of
painful trigger points in taut muscle bands, result in exceptional relief
of pain.

The treatment plan depends on the kind of illness, the state of the
illness and the patient’s response to acupuncture. Generally it starts at
a weekly basis, gradually reducing in frequency as the patient’s
condition improves.

Acupuncture can also be used to prevent illness and disharmony from
developing in the first place. An over-worked brain can damage the spleen
and lead to Qi deficiency causing imbalances in Yin and Yang and the
flow of Qi and Blood.”How does acupunture work then?” Acupuncture is
effective for a wide range of ailments including anything from respiratory,
digestive, cardio-vascular, musculo-skeletal and
emotional/psychological conditions.

Acupuncture is based on the Chinese belief that the human body is
controlled by a life force known as Qi (pronounced ‘chee’). Qi flows through
the body in channels, known as meridians. Acupuncture is an ancient
Chinese medical art, aimed at maintaining a proper balance in the body?s
functions. Illness is caused by an imbalance of Yin and Yang, the
positive and negative forces of expansion and contraction.

What can acupuncture do?

Acupuncture is no longer just for pain relief.  It is now more commonly
used  in some hospitals or  in  drug rehabilitation  centers  as one
of the measures to alleviate sufferings from  depression or addiction.
Other medical problems that  make use of acupuncture now are: obesity,
face lift, pregnancy problems,  and a wide ranges of ailments in the
different systems of  the human body.  Acupuncture’s advantage is that it
is not invasive and  it does not introduce any drugs into the body.

“How does acupuncture work?”  Acupuncture do not provide instant relief
from pain. Usually, it takes a few visits to acupuncture sessions
before relief from pain is felt. But it is a non invasive and effective for
various ailments of the different body systems, like the respiratory,
cardio-skeletal and their systems.

There are over two thousand  identified acupuncture points where the
needles maybe inserted.  These  points are along the Qi pathways or
meridians.  The human body has fourteen  pathways or meridians  on which Qi,
the body’s energy or life force should flow smoothly.  Illness occurs
if  Qi can not flow freely due to blocks in the meridian. The insertion
of the needles are said to remove  whatever blocks the smooth flow of
Qi . The body is then stimulated by the renewed release in Qi or
energy, and  recovers by itself.

An Introduction to Acupuncture

Acupuncture forms part of traditional Chinese medicine. It has been
claimed that it is one of the oldest forms of healing throughout the
world. Underneath acupuncture is the belief that a disruption in the flow of
imbalances and qi within the forces of both yin and yang cause
diseases to occur. A combination of herbs, massage, meditation and acupuncture
are believed to restore the balance of yin-hang and the flow of qi and
this helps the healing process. Acupuncture is the stimulation of
specific points of the body, which removes blockages in the flow of qi and
therefore restores and maintains one’s health. In the United States,
acupuncture is known to be an area of alternative medicine, and is not
widely accepted as part of conventional medicine.

Although acupuncture is not accepted as being part of traditional
medicine, there are several points that we should consider about this
procedure:

Chinese and other Asian people have used acupuncture for thousands of
years.

Scientists have been studying the effectiveness of acupuncture for
treating many conditions for many years.

Not many complications arise due to acupuncture, although serious side
effects can be created if the treatment is not performed by a person
who is qualified.

Although acupuncture has existed in China and other Asian countries for
several years, it has only been used in the United States since 1971.
Since it was introduced, many people have chosen to use it for a
multitude of conditions, including chronic pain, arthritis, post-surgical
pain and migraines. Many people do not like the thought of needles being
injected into them, but most are extremely happy with the benefits
achieved from using acupuncture. Many people try acupuncture after all
traditional medical procedures have failed to help them.

One should not be scared of acupuncture as long as you are treated by a
qualified practitioner. Sometimes, practitioners do not follow proper
safety procedures or people choose a practitioner who is not suitably
qualified and this can lead to problems. Nobody would visit a medical
doctor who was not properly qualified to treat you, and one should take
the same care when choosing an acupuncture practitioner. In the United
States, use of the needles is regulated by the FDA, and can even include
a requirement for one time use.

By understanding the procedure and being careful to choose a qualified
practitioner, you will gain a better understanding of acupuncture and
will be able to make an informed decision regarding the benefits it may
provide for you. One should not choose a practitioner based solely on
the recommendation of someone else, unless you have first conducted your
own research.
