Scientific research findings have shown that a naturally occuring ingredient in red wine has been found to expand life-expectancy. Namely resveratrol, which is found in the skin of red grapes. Could this be a non-chemical and non-surgical way to gracefully age? Throughout the years the company of resveratrol has not been unknown to citizens of France.
Now pharmaceutical giants are rushing resveratrol supplements into production with great speed. The studies so far on resveratrol have been limited to flies, mice and worms. The studies revealed that flies live 30% longer, and fish and worms by 60%.
Working on the National Institute of Aging’s Harvard Medical School research, was Dr Rafael de Cabo. He said that the diet the mice where on consisted of dense calories and saturated fats. The resveratrol compound protected the mice from any dangerous side effects.
Resveratrol has also been strongly linked to treating cancer and diabetes. Much more research will have to be conducted, but this could be the breakthrough medical science has been looking for in the fight against cancer, diabetes and aging.
Once more nature may have provided the key to another breakthrough in science. Now resveratrol, a phytoalexin in red wine may be the answer to a major threat to every nation, obesity. The mice in the study where fed what is the equivalent to a large section of societies’ actual diets, highly saturated fats. This did not cause them to die sooner.
A University of Rochester research study concluded that resveratrol can stop pancreatic cancer cells from reaching and destroying vital energy stores in the body. By cutting of their route, the cancerous cells in turn cannot spread.
Most supplements on the market are promoted with hype. Resveratrol on the other hand was discovered by accident. The French it seems have been unknowingly increasing their life span for years, albeit by consuming red wine. Even though they consume a diet high in saturated fat, their mortality from heart disease is lower than that of the USA’s.
What does the future hold for resveratrol? Since it’s a naturally occurring product, it’s not going to disappear anywhere fast. So far the tests have been positive. It may not be able to claim the fountain of youth status yet, but one thing resveratrol has got going for it, is that it is a natural compound. That’s something to brag about, especially in an age of Frankenstein science.
