An amazing revelation in the scientific world has displayed a substance in red grapes and thus red wine, is attributed to increasing life span. The compound called resveratrol could eliminate the need for harmful anti aging chemical and surgical treatments. For years the French have been unknowingly benefitting from resveratrol, by consuming red wine.
All the major pharmaceutical manufactures are putting resveratrol supplements into production. The studies thus far into resveratrol have been concerned only with worms, flies and mice. On one of these studies it was found out that by taking the substance, worms and fish had a 60% increased life span and flies had increased theirs by 30%.
Dr Rafael de Cabo, from the National Institute of Aging at Harvard Medical School, US said that after six months, resveratrol essentially prevented most of the negative effects of a high calorie diet in mice. In essence the mice who where over eating actually did not damage their life expectancy. They actually increased it.
Other studies have also shown resveratrol to be useful in the battle against cancer and diabetes. It is promising to think that accelerated aging, diabetes and cancer could one day be treated with this natural compound.
In this era of highly saturated fats being ever more prevalant in the modern diet and the inevitable onslaught of obesity, it seems one may now be able to enjoy those guilty pleasures and get away with it. The mice who were fed a modern equivalent to a high fat diet, along with resveratrol actually lived longer than the control group of mice who weren’t fed resveratrol.
In diabetes patients it has been discovered that resveratrol prevents cancerous pancreatic cells from reaching the bodies energy cells or mitochondria, and destroying them. The research was carried out by The University of Rochester. More research has to be carried out on the effect resveratrol has on humans.
There has been a lot of hype surrounding new wonder supplements and their claims. Most of them have just alluded to slightly promoting their cause. Resveratrol really hit the headlines after statistics revealed that a large percentage of France’s occupants eat a highly saturated fat and high calorie diet, yet the instance of heart disease is lower than that of America’s.
At least this will not involve any suspect medical practices, as resveratrol is a natural product. No genetic engineering or remaps are needed in any experiments. The research findings have been promising to date, and more information is being gathered daily. The future is certainly bright for resveratrol.
