Developed in 1922 by Dr. Mikao Usui, but drawing heavily on ancient healing methods, Reiki is a spiritual healing practice. Reiki is based on the concept of moving a healing energy after a Reiki practitioner is attuned, and have developed the skills and knowledge to understand and optimize the healing energies.
This healing Reiki energy is intertwined with the concept of Chakra energy, certainly in modern-day Reiki practice. Many people believe in the concepts of Reiki, even though clinical trials did not support the concept of Reiki in 2008.
Dr. Usui, after a 21 day retreat on Mount Kurami, developed Reiki, which he described as the knowledge and spiritual power to apply to others and attune them. During this 21 day retreat, he meditated, fasted and prayed. Reik principles have developed, based on ethical principles developed by Dr. Usui after his retreat. These principles survive and thrive even today.
You will not find just one governing body for Reiki, rathere, there are many forms of Reiki with their own organizational structures. While there are many, they can be said to fall into two broad categories or systems. The first is traditional, or Japanese Reiki, and the second is Western Reiki.
Intuition is very much the rule in traditional Reiki, in terms of where to place the hands, whereas Western Reiki has more definition of hand placement. More emphasis on healing exists in Western Reiki as well as more defined processes for advancement.
Western Reiki spread to the Western World, via Hawaii, and then California and beyond.
There are numerous ways and methods for those who wish to become a Reiki Master. There are those who firmly believe that it should be arduous and costly to become a Reiki Master. Much to their chagrin, economical methods and systems have emerged.
Reiki is one of those things where you will get out of it what you put into it. Dr. In Usui’s own words (on his inscription), we have all that we need to be a Reiki Master within ourselves. If Reiki comes from within, the time involved to master it can be very short with the right help and guidance. And with the advent of the internet, there are online options also - remote attunement, which supports an online approach is accepted as a normal skill of a Reiki Master.
All you need to master Reiki and become a Reiki master is a Reiki master to guide you. The Reiki Master can teach you and attune you remotely (from a different location) but you need a Reiki master.
